Re-Creating the Reality of the Crime of Non-Stranger Sexual Assault.

 

Description

     Examination of myths and misconceptions surrounding

     victimization of non-stranger sexual assault.  Emphasis on over-

     coming consent defense through a realistic view of offender

     accountability.

 

Objectives

  • Understand the unique challenges presented by non-stranger sexual assault cases to law enforcement, prosecution, advocacy and victim services.
  • Recognize the similarities between non-stranger sexual assault and stranger sexual assault.
  • Identify the potential for re-offense by offenders in non-stranger sexual assault.
  • Focus on pre-cursor conduct of stalking.

Description

     Focus on interview of victim considering influence of trauma with

     view toward direct examination at trial.  Attention will also be

     given to critical importance of documentation of victim’s reality

     of sexual assault in investigative interviews. 

Objectives

  • Recognize the importance of victim interview as heart-beat of the case.
  • Become familiar with techniques in investigation and prosecution for allowing victim an opportunity to describe victimization.
  • Understand importance of sensory, emotional and peripheral detail.
  • Maintain focus on offender accountability for victimization.

Exposing the Predator: Intoxication and Sexual Assault

 

Description

     Identification of investigative and prosecutorial techniques for

     handling these challenging cases.  Examination of strategies for

     overcoming myths and misconceptions through an understanding

     of the predatory use of alcohol. 

Objectives

  • Recognize the prevalence of alcohol related sexual assault.
  • Identify strategies to overcome myths and misconceptions.
  • Apply consideration of stalking conduct and predatory use of alcohol to an offender focused prosecution.

Cross Examination of the Offender

 

Description

     Focus on unmasking the predator with emphasis on drawing   

     intelligence from the investigation and discrediting “altered

     reality.”

Objectives

  • Recognize importance of focus on offender accountability.
  • Develop insight into offender behavior and impact on victim.
  • Develop strategies for questioning offenders.
