Silent Crime: The Realities of Sexual Aggression Presenter: Stephen Thompson |
| Silent Crime: The Realities of Sexual Aggression is a general presentation in which Thompson will address date/acquaintance assault, the date rape sequence and common characteristics of date rapists. He will speak to the reality of how and why sexual aggression occurs through analysis of the offender. He will also address methods that work and don't work for avoidance of sexual violence, and ways to make our communities safer by sharing the Four C's of Sexual Aggression that he developed. |

Investigation Strategies Presenter: Stephen Thompson |
| Investigation Strategies will include specific information and ideas for sexual assault investigation, focusing especially on date/acquaintance rape and instances of drug-facilitated sexual assault in which consent is the issue and evidence may seem scarce. Thompson will provide training on ways to gather evidence, identify witnesses, build a case against the perpetrator and present a case so that it is accepted by prosecution. This presentation includes offender profiles and an analysis of the behavior of sexual offenders within the legal system, and how to use this information to aid an investigation |
| Rape Trauma: A Continuum of Care Presenters: Candice Harshner and Kate Taylor |
Rape Trauma: A Continuum of Care will cover the healing process for adult survivors of sexual assault and child sexual abuse. Information will be given on Rape Trauma Syndrome and how to assist clients through the various stages from the crisis phase through integration, and how to explain to victims what they are experiencing. In addition, the presenters will explain how the developmental stages of healing affect the interactions of victims with the advocacy, medical and legal systems. The presenters will discuss ways to support clients, including providing crisis intervention, counseling and therapy, support groups, and opportunities to take part in social action. |
Alternatives: Men's Role in Ending Sexual Violence Presenter: Frank Jewell |
Alternatives: Men's Role in Ending Sexual Violence will focus on how men can get involved in the movement to end sexual violence and what their appropriate role. The presenter will cover information such as how men can intervene as bystanders to stop sexual violence, how men can interrupt and confront sexism, and how men can avoid participating in sexist institutions. There will be discussion on how best to education young men about issues of violence against women, and what are the societal and institutional barriers that prevent us from doing so. In addition, the presenter will explain what the role is for activist men in the feminist movement - how men can best act in a supportive role and share power with women, how men can access information about what women need from them, and how the men's movement intersects with victim services. |

Creating a Winnable Case Presenter: Kaarin Long |
Creating a Winnable Case will discuss the investigation of a sexual assault case from a prosecution perspective. It will include some common barriers and solutions when sexual assault victims are interviewed by law enforcement, how sexual assault victims can be unique compared with other victims of crime, what a law enforcement agency can do to improve the rate of reporting and prosecution of sexual assault in its community, and ideas for addressing the common consent defense case. The presentation will include dialogue among prosecutor and law enforcement attendees about challenges with sexual assault cases and techniques for "selling" a case to a jury. |
Holistic Healing Presenters: Elizabeth Doherty, Beverly Harries, Nancy Hinzmann and Kelly Ravenfeather |
Holistic Healing will cover a variety of methods which are beneficial in helping victims heal through working with the mind, body and spirit. There will be discussion on why it is important to heal as a whole person, how to treat a whole person, and how alternative therapies can intersect. The presenters will share specific methods that they use, how to create plan for working with other professionals in order to work with a victim, and how they create a healing atmosphere in their offices. |
Creating the Matrix: Responding to Sexual Violence on Campus Presenter: Stephen Thompson |
Creating the Matrix: Responding to Sexual Violence on Campus will address sexual aggression in high schools and on college and university campuses. Thompson will give information on best practices and policies for educational institutions to raise awareness, make its campus safer, and respond to incidents of sexual violence. The focus will be not on risk reduction for victims, but on how to create a climate in which sexual violence is not tolerated, what policies and procedures need to be in place, what barriers exist in the university systems, and how to implement programs on campus. This program is for administrators and concerned individuals who want to improve the campus and community response to sexual aggression. |

Systems Advocacy Presenter: Donna Dunn |
Systems Advocacy will include information for those who work within and with systems that respond to victims of sexual violence. When we cross discipline lines and begin to work with other professionals, we are sometimes caught in misunderstandings, confusion, and misinformed stereotypes. In this complicated world, the benefits of collaborating cannot be over estimated. During this workshop, we will examine some basics about how to best engage with other systems; identify and address necessary changes from one system to another; learn how to trouble-shoot when there are break-downs in the systems' response, and discuss how to build accountability into collaborative work. Whether you are a law enforcement officer, medical personnel, a prosecutor or an advocate, this discussion about systems advocacy is for you. |
Social Action and Social Change Presenters: Carla Ferrucci and Elizabeth Olson |
Social Action and Social Change will address ways to affect change at the community and legislative levels. This program will give information on how to engage the community in your issue and how to build support with-in for your movement. The presenters will also discuss what people need to know about choosing legislative policy, how to best advocate for change with the legislature and how to work within the political realm. |
Cultural Perspectives on Sexual Violence Presenters: LaTonja Garrett, Susana Pelayo-Woodward, Rebecca St. George |
Cultural Perspectives on Sexual Violence will include information about the history of sexual oppression in different cultures, current viewpoints on sexual violence within other cultures, and how the past and present intersect to cause high rates of sexual assault and low rates of reporting within communities of color. There will be a discussion of barriers that victims from different cultures may face when reporting sexual assault within our advocacy, legal and medical systems. The presenters will share also how victims in different cultures may react differently or may need different resources than are often provided or available, how to help a victim access what is already available within their own cultural communities to assist with healing, and how to respectfully work within a culture that is different than your own. |
