Outreach Advocate

Duties: Under the supervision of the Systems Advocate/Advocacy Coordinator
  • Provide outreach to specific populations within the Duluth Community with emphasis on West Duluth area
  • Provide crisis intervention and support services to clients
  • Provide community education and outreach to a variety of community agencies, schools and groups
  • Perform other related duties as required

Accountabilities:

Outreach to specific populations

  • Develop victim outreach plan for West Duluth with emphasis on underserved populations
  • At least once a week perform office hours in West Duluth
  • Coordinate outreach services with community agencies and resources in West Duluth
  • Provide education for staff at agencies where outreach is conducted

Crisis intervention and support services to clients

  • Provide direct services to clients with particular emphasis on serving individuals from West Duluth community
  • Refer clients to appropriate internal or community professionals as necessary
  • Advocate for clients with professionals and systems
  • Ensure that cultural needs of victims are being addressed in advocacy
  • Assist with providing staff back-up for crisis line and hospital advocates
  • Assist in planning and facilitating support/outreach groups in West Duluth community

Community outreach to community agencies, schools and groups

  • Conduct needs assessment for West Duluth community
  • Assist with development of resource materials for outreach to agencies, schools and groups in West Duluth
  • Coordinate outreach to diverse populations in West Duluth and assist in ensuring that PAVSA is working to address diverse needs
  • Assist in developing culturally appropriate materials for outreach
  • Coordinate with other PAVSA staff to ensure that outreach activities are staffed
  • Provide community education/awareness sessions to agencies, schools and community groups in West Duluth

Other related duties

  • Work in collaboration with other PAVSA staff to develop evaluation tool for outreach work
  • Assist with grant reporting for West Duluth outreach efforts (quarterly statistics and narrative report)
  • Participate in short and long term staff planning sessions including weekly staff meetings
  • Serve as a representative of PAVSA at community and professional meetings as needed
  • Participate in PAVSA’s Volunteer Advocate training as needed
  • Provide monthly staff report for Board of Directors
  • Attend and participate in PAVSA events

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science degree in social work or related field and two years’ experience in advocacy or direct service in a human services agency; without bachelor’s degree, 3-5 years’ experience providing advocacy and/or direct services
  • Prior completion of Minnesota approved 40-hour sexual assault advocacy training strongly preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of resources and systems which interface with victims of sexual assault and intimate partner sexual violence
  • Understanding of survivor-centered and trauma-informed care
  • Understanding of the impact of sexual violence on adults and youth
  • Experience providing direct services in sexual violence or a related field
  • Experience working with diverse populations and marginalized communities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with persons from a variety of backgrounds
  • Experience working with staff and/or volunteers from a variety of backgrounds
  • Good written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Knowledge and aptitude of Microsoft Office and other related forms of technology

Additional Information

Salary

  • $19-21/hour; 40 hours/week; full benefits
  • Grant funded for two years (future funding for the position will be pursued but cannot be guaranteed)
